Jazzcrazy is proud to profile Julia Turner
Julia is a freelance vocalist, cellist and double bassist currently studying for a BA in Jazz at Leeds College of Music.
This year she has been specialising vocally in Indian Improvisation and Contemporary Jazz improvisation and has been lucky enough to work with Jesse Bannister and Jez Franks among others.
At the college she has had the opportunity to learn the double bass with teaching from Zoltan Dekany and Garry Jackson. Having played cello since the age of 10 the double bass was a natural progression for her.
Her current projects include working with The Julia Turner Quintet. The quintet is made up of my vocals, Katie Hawcutt on tenor sax, Nik Rutherford on guitar, Will Reeder on double bass, Katie Patterson on drums.
Julia is also part of a recently established trio who got together with the idea of doing community based gigs and workshops. Trio16 gets its name from the amount of strings on two guitars and a double bass. It is made up of Julia on vocals and double bass and Nik Rutherford and Ben Danzig both on guitar.
Always busy, Julia has recently started singing with a new four-part female vocal group.
