Jazzcrazy is proud to profile Katie Hawcutt
Katie is currently on the BA Jazz course at Leeds College of Music studying under some fantastic musicians such as Joel Purnell, Jamil Sheriff, Jez Franks, Omar Puente and Mark Donlon. Originally from the West Midlands, she was able to study for a year prior to coming to Leeds at the Birmingham Conservatoire with saxophonist Jean Toussiant.
Katie was born in Worcester in 1988. With her father being a professional musician, she was brought up surrounded by music. From a young age, Katie displayed a keen interest in making music, and with the whole-hearted support of her parents, she took up the flute when she was seven and the saxophone a few years later. In her early teens Katie started to get serious about jazz taking lessons from sax player Stuart Corbett, excellent educator and performer. She hasn't really looked back since! In the next few years Katie got involved in many exciting projects and ensembles which exposed her to some amazing musicians and a variety of musical genres. She has had the opportunity to travel and work in lots of different musical environments, learning with people from many cultures. These experiences have really helped Katie to develop as a performer and in 2006 she was awarded a Diploma of Licentiateship in Jazz Performance from the London College of Music.
Although on the Jazz Course in Leeds Katie loves playing a wide variety of music. She is experienced in playing many different styles of music and working in a variety of performance situations ranging from big band and jazz gigs, session work, soul/ pop and rock gigs, orchestral work, arranging and composing, playing in pit bands and also playing function gigs.
Her current projects include recording for an alternative/ folk/ rock band called Arthur Rigby and The Baskervylles, recording and touring with ska/ pop band Becks and the Bullets and writing contemporary music for her own ensembles.
